Pets and weddings

According to the American Pet Products Association’s 2013-2014 National Pet Owners Survey, over 68 percent of U.S. households have pets, which includes over 83 million dogs. These animals are an important part of many families, and including them in wedding celebrations is a common decision. More and more wedding venues are making it easier to incorporate pets into nuptials, and there are numerous ways for them to participate in the festivities.

Things to Consider Before Involving Your Pet

  • Personality

Some pets are great at weddings and others are probably best left at home. How obedient and comfortable an animal is around strangers is important. The last thing you want to worry about at your wedding is how a pet will behave. Even animals that are very outgoing may be overwhelmed by a crowd. Understanding your pet’s personality will help determine how best to include them.

  • Notify Your Guests

It is a good idea to let your guests know if there will be pets present. People with allergies will particularly appreciate the advance notice.

  • Hire a Pet Sitter

No matter the role your pet plays, having a designated sitter is a must. You don’t want to be responsible for following it around, and it is unsafe to let an animal roam unattended.

  • Safety First

If you plan to include pets, be sure there are no toxic flower arrangements or foods that may make them sick within easy reach.

Ways to Include Them

There are numerous ways for pets to participate in the festivities. Some pet owners want their animals to have a starring role, while others desire a cameo appearance only.

  • The Proposal

Tying an engagement ring or “Will you marry my Dad (or Mom)” sign around their necks are two ways to incorporate your pets into a marriage proposal.

  • Save the Date Card

Some couples choose to prominently feature a favorite pet in their save the date card.

  • Wedding Photos

Pets can add a lot of character to wedding pictures.

  • Ring Bearer

The ring bearer is a popular role for a pet. However, before attempting this, be certain the animal won’t run off with the ring tied around its neck.

  • Carry Them Down the Aisle

Some pets are replacing bouquets as the go-to accessory for the walk down the aisle. This is only recommended if you are very comfortable carrying your pet in your wedding attire. Be sure to have someone to hand the animal off to when you get to the altar.

  • Use Them as Transportation

Depending upon how large and strong an animal is, you can potentially ride it to the wedding or reception. Horse lovers sometimes ride their mounts to their nuptials. In India, grooms traditionally ride elephants to their wedding ceremonies.

  • Cake Topper

Another way to incorporate pets into the festivities is to have a cake topper made that looks like them.

Dressing Your Pet for a Wedding

Some animals are more willing to be dressed up than others. There are a number of retailers that sell special wedding outfits for pets. Martha Stewart Pets has a wedding line for dogs. It includes wedding dresses and veils, tuxedos, and bridesmaids dresses. Most of the outfits range in price from $13-$20. It is a good idea to have pets try on the outfit before the wedding. After 30 minutes, you will typically know if they are willing to wear it or will spend the whole day trying to remove it. Another option is to have your florist make a wreath for your pet’s neck. Wearing it only for the ceremony and pictures is advisable; it may be uncomfortable for longer than that. Decorative collars and leashes are more minimal alternatives.

Special pets can add to the joy of a wedding. Finding an appropriate role for them is important.
